Who eBay works best for
eBay has a massive buyer base and works well for a wide range of items — electronics, collectibles, clothing, sports equipment, books, tools, and more. It is particularly good for branded or specific items where buyers search by model number or name, and for anything that might not sell locally.
Start with what you already own
Before buying anything to resell, go through your home. Electronics, gaming consoles, cameras, instruments, branded clothing, and collectibles are among the highest-selling categories. Search eBay for your item and filter by "Sold listings" to see what similar items actually sold for — not what sellers are asking.
How to write a listing that sells
Use a clear, specific title — include the brand, model, size, and condition. Write a condition description that is honest about any flaws. Take photos in natural light from multiple angles, including any wear or damage. Inaccurate listings lead to returns, disputes, and poor feedback.
Understanding eBay fees
eBay charges a final value fee of around 13% to 15% of the total sale price including shipping. There are also payment processing fees. Factor these in before pricing. A $50 sale may net you $42 to $43 after fees. Shipping costs come out of your pocket unless you price them into the listing or charge separately.
Shipping: the part most beginners get wrong
Weigh items before listing and calculate shipping costs using USPS, UPS, or FedEx rate calculators. Underestimating shipping is one of the most common ways new sellers lose money. Offer free shipping only if you have priced it into the item. eBay labels are usually cheaper than drop-off rates at the post office.
Building your feedback score
New accounts with no feedback can struggle to sell at full price. Buyers rely on seller feedback to trust a transaction. Start with lower-value items to build your rating. Respond promptly to messages, ship quickly, and pack items well. A good feedback score lets you charge market rates rather than discounting to compete.
